Back from Festivals & a Bestseller!

Whew! Just back from festivals in Calgary/Banff and Vancouver. I had a wonderful time and spoke to hundreds of students. One of my fave memories is presenting MONSTEROLOGY to about 300 grade 4-6 students, telling them all about the trouble I went through to interview Dracula. During Q&A one kid piped up with, "Were you scared when you met Dracula?" "Of course," I answered, "it's only natural to be frightened, he's a vampire." I highly recommend both festivals (the Calgary/Banff festival is a combined festival that includes three nights stay at Banff. Glorious time there.).

Came home to find out that MONSTEROLOGY is the #5 new release bestseller in Canada! I don't know if any of my books will ever debut that high again, so my wife, daughter, and I immediately went out and celebrated with lunch and dessert (chocolate/peanut butter cake and an almond turtle cake).

Oh, did I mention that I finished the final draft of Megiddo's Shadow, my WW1 novel yesterday, too? A great week!

Isn't the Vancouver festival fun? I did it last year and felt like visiting royalty they treat you so well. Were you much affected by the teachers' strike that was going on then?

It is a wonderful festival. Nothing like waking up in a hotel on Granville Island and looking out over the marina. The teacher's strike was a big worry, as far as attendance, but in the end 1 of my three events was full, and the other 2 3/4's full. Teachers, even though they were on strike, still brought their students or made sure they had tickets. Parents also brought their students. Or they came from private schools. It was very heartening...after all some of us thought there'd only be 2 or 3 students...

#5? That is so cool. Congratulations.

I'm looking forward to reading your WWI novel. My daughter is studying it in school right now, so I'm getting her read Iain Lawrence's "Lord of the Nutcracker Men", which I liked. It is a time period that seems to be little written about in YA lit, so another offering will be welcome. Does it have a release date yet?

Yep, Megiddo's Shadow will be out in the fall of '06. It's set in Palestine during the war. A part of the war I found very interesting. Lord of the Nutcracker Men was a great book.

Ah, illumination. I was wondering about the title, but if it's set in Palestine, the mystery is solved. I'll watch for it. :-)

I bet MONSTEROLOGY is great fun to present to schools. The kids must love it! Hope it continues to be a big hit.

You know, it's my first true "humor" book and I feel like a stand-up comedian whenever I read from it. Plus the students always have questions like "Were you scared when you met Dracula?"

: )

It sure is a wonderful place. And to have three "FREE" days in Banff (meals and expenses paid for) is such a gift. It's one of the many great things about the Calgary writer's festival. I did some sightseeing, but also did some work, too!!
